Dragon guts.

Black as tar, twice as thick, and so-not-fun to hear squishing around under the soles of brand new burgundy clogs.

“Darn,” Willow muttered, attempting to pry her feet out of the gook as she swept her eyes over the alleyway scanning for signs of life. At first glance, the view didn’t tell her much that she didn’t already know given what she was standing in.

She was between two fairly nondescript buildings and there was a dumpster off to one side. The dragon’s head had been hacked off and had rolled off towards the other wall. Of course, no one had thought to close the dragon’s eyes post-mortem because he was most definitely still able to stare right into her soul and scare the dickens straight out of her.

Willow shuddered, turning away from the dragon’s face. She attempted to lift her legs once more and this time her shoes popped free of the guts with a sickening splurch.

She considered using a quick cleaning spell, but opted against it, remembering the last time she had used one. Not even the mops and buckets summoned by the Sorcerer’s Apprentice would have been able to compete with the mess she had made and she wasn’t about to go through that again. It was far more advisable to just get new shoes at Sears. With that in mind, Willow did her best to navigate around the various dragon-y pools of quicksand so she could get a closer look at the dumpster.

Twin groans startled her and she whipped her head around to find the source.

She saw them instantly.

“Angel!” She shouted, rushing over to the shadows where two vampires were curled up against each other, suckling and lapping at each other’s wounds in a fruitless attempt to speed up the healing process.

“Angel!” She shouted, rushing over to the shadows where two vampires were curled up into each other, suckling and lapping at each other’s wounds in a fruitless attempt to speed up the healing process.

“Spike,” Willow murmured as she dropped down to her haunches beside them. He had an obvious gash across his cheek, a black eye, and bruised bloody knuckles. His shirt had been sliced open in a few places, but it was hard to tell how long or deep the cuts were.

Despite these injuries, it was obvious that Spike had fared a bit better than Angel, who had scorch marks decorating his face and whose clothes were shredded into scraps which barely covered him.

“Willow,” Angel grimaced, clutching his stomach as he attempted to shift positions, “You’re here.”

“Of course, I’m here,” Willow replied. “I would have been here sooner, but….”

Willow paused, distracted by the agony that was etched across their faces. Did she really need to go into the whole explanation of how Kennedy and Giles were unreliable messengers?

Or that she would have actually been here sooner if she and Kennedy hadn’t gotten into a huge fight that resulted in them deciding to…

Take a break.

Which was really just sugarcoating for the harsh truth: their relationship was finished, kaput, done for, finito and it was all because Willow couldn’t handle her “little white lie” about Fred.

Fred was dying.

Correction: Fred was dead.

The point was that Kennedy had told her that Fred was peachy keen, even after Willow told Kennedy and Giles that the spirits of the astral plane had been screaming and keening about the return of the Old One.

Taking a deep breath, Willow chose to shake her grumpy feelings off and return her focus to two friends who had once more risked life and limb to save the world.

“Actually, don’t worry about that. Let’s just get you somewhere safe where you can get cleaned up. Is the hotel still around?”

Angel nodded weakly. “We’re close.”

“Good,” Willow replied, inhaling sharply and grasping her hands around one of theirs. “This is gonna hurt.”

They arrived exactly where Willow had wanted them to, which was Angel’s old room. She remembered from the last time she was here that Angel had a large Jacuzzi-style bathtub with a red and gold tiled edge that was about 7 inches across and nearly swallowed the bathroom in size. It was also a perfect dumping ground for two vampires desperately in need of a warm soak.

“Can you get your clothes off?” Willow asked.

Spike nodded and tugged at the remains of his clothes. He obviously had some vampire strength left because his black t-shirt tore in half and fluttered away from his muscular frame.

Angel was able to the same. Willow helped with shoes, but she let them rip their own pants off.

Willow felt her breath hitch in her throat with equal parts sympathy and appreciation as she took in the full view of the men who’d once been very intimate with her best friend.

She certainly wasn’t a blushing virgin these days and she’d had plenty of experience with naked skin, but the last few years had been more about the womanly kind and not so much the manly kind.

Angel and Spike were definitely made up of the manly kind of flesh.

Very, very manly.

Spike caught her eye for a brief moment as her own eyes desperately tried to look anywhere but at their crotches. She saw him manage a smirk, but he couldn’t manage the snark because he groaned and rested his head against Angel’s shoulder.

Angel looked at her too, but there was no mischievous grin on his face. He was just Angel, being stoic and vaguely Oz-like.

It reminded her that she was playing nursemaid and she was not here to indulge in girlish fantasies.

Willow ran her gaze up and down Angel and Spike, assessing the damages.

Both vampires were covered in an array of bruises and cuts and gashes and scratches that definitely needed to be tended to stat.

Willow marched over to the tub and turned on the hot water faucet. As the tub filled, she positioned herself behind Angel and snaked her arms under his shoulder blades. With a little help from the Goddess, she managed to haul him into the tub. Then she did the same to Spike.

Once the tub was full, Willow turned off the faucet, perched on the edge of the tub, and started to rub a damp washcloth over Angel’s shoulders. The scorch marks were slowly showing signs of fading, which was definitely of the good.

“Appreciate you coming out, Red,” Spike murmured, leaning his head against the edge of the tub. “Guessin’ the astral plane wasn’t worth a long trip, huh?”

“Not so much,” Willow replied, gently massaging Angel’s neck. Angel noticeably tensed up under her ministrations.

“You should have come sooner. We called,” Angel said, irritation in his tone. “Fred was dying and you couldn’t even be bothered to….”

Angel winced in pain and Willow removed the washcloth, her stomach tightening.

“I didn’t know,” Willow replied. “Yes, I was visiting the astral plane, but I wasn’t gone long. I mean, I was gone long enough to hear the phantoms whisper about the rise of the Old Ones, but I didn’t….”

Willow pressed the washcloth against her forehead, disappointment creasing her features.

“Giles and Kennedy told me you had it handled. That Fred would be okay and I thought…. Goddess, they lied to me to, Angel. I know we haven’t ever been best buddies, but I care about you. Without you, we…I…would have died in that boiler room when that invisible ghost tried to kill us and…and….”

Willow felt like she was grasping at straws and tears burned in the corners of her eyes.

“I left her to come and help you.”

Spike nodded, immediately understanding, but Angel looked confused.

“My girlfriend, Kennedy. She told me if I teleported, we were done.”

Willow had to admit that it really sucked to say those words out loud, but it was obvious that Angel and Spike needed to here them.

“So I’m here and she and I are done.”

“You okay?” Angel asked. Willow could hear concern in his voice and she felt both grateful and guilty for it. He had every right to be mad. He had lost his friend to death and all she had lost was one love in a line of... well, only three, but she’d cared about Kennedy.

“I’ll be fine,” Willow said. “The long and the short of it is relationships suck.”

Spike managed a chuckle. “That they do, Will.”

“Says love’s self-proclaimed bitch,” Angel replied, narrowing his eyes slightly.

Willow switched positions and started dabbing at Spike’s cheek. Spike hissed, but let her continue without vamping out. Willow glanced back at Angel and saw him tilt his head, acknowledging thanks that she was caring for Spike, a man – vampire – who had been at his side through thick and through thin for over a hundred years. It was impressive to think of anyone having a partner for that long and she admired that aspect of their unlives.

“You two have had a relationship for a century or so,” Willow pointed out. “What’s your secret?”

“He can’t get enough of me,” Spike said.

“He annoys me,” Angel replied simultaneously.

“Hey!” Spike protested and Willow giggled a little.

“Well, I’m glad you two have each other. That after all these years and all of these ends of the worlds, you’re still by each other’s sides. It seems like it would be a pretty nice thing to have.” Willow replied.

“You know…,” Angel flashed her an unexpected smile as he tossed a look over at Spike that seemed to say everything and nothing at the same time. Willow was no stranger to using telepathy, but whatever they had together was different. They didn’t have to use words to share their thoughts. They operated on nonverbal cues, actions, things that…

Willow’s train of thought was interrupted by the cool touch of Angel and Spike’s hands on her arms.

“I think we’d be all right with one more,” Spike finished with a grin.

Before Willow could squeak out a response, she toppled backwards into the tub and landed with a splash and a laugh.

As Spike and Angel moved towards her with the clear intention of welcoming her into their fold, Willow decided that there were far worse places to get stuck.

Far, far worse.

Willow you lucky girl! There are indeed far worse places you could be stuck! I think we could all benefit from being "stuck" once in a while ;)

Well done!
